A volcano erupted in southwest Iceland.

A volcano erupted in southwest Iceland.

The volcanic eruption began in the southwest of Iceland; some residents in the region were previously evacuated, the RUV television and radio company reports, citing the National Meteorological Office.

“The eruption began in the area of the Sundhnukur volcanic hill north of the city of Grindavik… A coast guard helicopter will soon take to the air to clarify the exact location and scale of the eruption,” the meteorologists said in a communiqué.

The broadcaster, citing the civil defense service, reports that the leaked magma is moving towards Grindavik.

Icelandic media previously reported that the town of Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa were evacuated due to the danger of an eruption.

Meteorologists also changed the flight color code to “red.” As noted, changing the color code of flights in itself does not mean disruptions in air traffic. Previous eruptions had no effect on it.

Iceland’s main airport, Keflavik Airport, has already announced that it is operating as normal.

The head of the national police, after consultation with law enforcement officers in the region, announced the introduction of a state of emergency.
