A demonstration against the burning of the Koran takes place in Stockholm

Swedish Muslims hold a demonstration in the center of Stockholm against the burning of the Koran.

According to police, between 1,500 and 2,000 people gathered on Medborgarplatsen Square. It is noted that the Swedish Islamic League, which manages the mosque located there, received permission from the authorities to hold the procession.

“We are here to show our dissatisfaction with the burning of the Koran,” one of the participants in the action said.

On the first day of Eid al-Adha, June 28, a migrant (assumed to be from Iraq) tore pages from the Koran, wiped his shoes with them, then put bacon in the book and set it on fire. According to media reports, about 200 people watched this, some shouting in Arabic “God is great!” in protest, one was detained after trying to throw a stone at an actionist.

The action caused a wave of indignation around the world. Iraq demanded from Sweden to extradite the migrant who arranged the burning of the Koran, mass protests took place near the Swedish embassy in Baghdad. The incident was condemned by Algeria, Afghanistan, Egypt, Indonesia, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Uzbekistan and other countries. The Swedish ambassadors in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates protested.
