A bill on foreign agents has been submitted to the Parliament of Georgia

The ruling Georgian Dream party has submitted to the Georgian parliament a bill on transparency of foreign influence, similar to the American one, Speaker of the legislature Shalva Papuashvili said.

Earlier in early February, Georgian Dream announced that it would initiate a new law on foreign agents, which would be a literal analogue of the FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act) in force in the United States in order to prevent any speculation regarding the “law on transparency of foreign influence.”

“The American FARA law has been initiated. We will start discussing the project next week. Everyone will see that this is an accurate translation. If anyone has any complaints about any word, comma, paragraph of the text, please contact the United States,” Papuashvili told.

Earlier, the Georgian authorities also adopted the law on Transparency of Foreign Influence, also known as the Law on Foreign agents. The European Union criticized this law and demanded that Tbilisi repeal it, threatening to suspend the process of joining the EU, stop financial support and even stop the liberalization of the visa regime for citizens of this country.
