A Seattle court has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s order limiting birthright U.S. citizenship, CNN reports.

“I have been on the bench for more than four decades. I cannot remember another time when the issue at hand has been so clear,” Judge John Coughenour said in the ruling.

The judge was appointed during the administration of President Ronald Reagan. He granted the request of representatives of the states of Washington, Illinois, Oregon and Arizona, calling Trump’s order blatantly unconstitutional.

The plaintiffs claim that the head of the White House is violating the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, adopted in 1868.

According to the text of the decree that Trump previously signed, the child will not have the right to acquire US citizenship by birth, even if both parents were in the country legally at the time of his birth, but with documents only for temporary residence, including a tourist or work visa. If, for example, the child’s mother was in the United States illegally at the time of his birth, and the father was not a citizen or permanent American resident, the child will also not be able to apply for citizenship by birth.
