The US Supreme Court on Friday refused to overturn the conviction of US President-elect Donald Trump in a New York court on charges of forgery in the payment of money to former porn actress Stormy Daniels.
⠀
“The request for suspension… is denied,” the court’s decision said.
⠀
As the document explains, alleged irregularities in the examination of evidence in the trial against Trump can be reviewed through the normal appeal process.
⠀
The court also found that “the burden that the verdict would impose on the responsibilities of the President-elect is relatively unimportant in light of the trial court’s stated intent to impose a judgment of ‘unconditional release’ following a brief virtual hearing.”
⠀
Trump is accused of falsifying records in connection with payments to two women, including ex-porn actress Daniels, to keep quiet about their alleged affair. However, the jury has already found the president-elect guilty of all 34 counts in this case.
⠀
The politician’s lawyers unsuccessfully tried until the last minute to delay the sentencing, as well as to generally overturn the jury’s guilty verdict against the backdrop of Trump’s election victory and the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the immunity of the elected president. The highest court has refused to grant Trump absolute immunity from legal prosecution for his actions while president.
