US President-elect Donald Trump may declare an economic emergency in the country after his inauguration to impose tariffs on imports, CNN reported, citing sources.

“President-elect Donald Trump is considering declaring a national economic emergency to provide legal justification for imposing large numbers of blanket tariffs on (imports from) allies and adversaries,” the network’s website said, citing four people familiar with the matter.
⠀
According to the channel’s interlocutors, Trump is inclined to use the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which, in the event of a declaration of an economic emergency in the United States, will allow the head of state to personally control imports.
⠀
Trump will become the 45th and 47th president of the United States after his inauguration on January 20.

Increasing duties on imports of products from China and other countries is one of the most frequent topics in Trump’s speeches. According to his latest statements, he plans to introduce additional tariffs on imports of Chinese goods of 10%, while previously he spoke about the possibility of introducing duties of 60-100%. On imports from other countries, the elected US President threatened to impose duties of 10% on all goods. However, Trump later promised separate import duties of 25% for Mexico and Canada.
