Finland has received a request to investigate a communication cable break with Germany.

The Finnish Central Criminal Police said on its website that it had received a request to investigate the break in the C-Lion1 communication cable between Finland and Germany in the Baltic Sea.

“The Central Criminal Police has received a request for an investigation from Cinia Oy regarding a cable break in the Baltic Sea… The Central Criminal Police is investigating the incident,” the statement said.

Finnish operator Cinia Oy said on Monday that a fault was detected in the undersea telecommunications cable between Finland and Germany C-Lion1 and the cable was disabled. Germany and Finland later said they were concerned about damage to an undersea communications cable running between the two countries in the Baltic Sea and that a thorough investigation was underway.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday that the cable rupture indicated it was sabotage, although there was no evidence at this time.

C-Lion1 is the first cable laid directly between Finland and Germany. Previous communication channels passed through Sweden and Denmark. Cable laying began in October 2015 and was completed in January 2016.
