Parliamentary elections have begun in Georgia.

Parliamentary elections have begun in Georgia.

Polling stations have opened in Georgia for voting in parliamentary elections.

Parliamentary elections in the country are held according to a proportional system. To enter parliament, parties must overcome the 5% barrier.

The party with the most votes may present a candidate for prime minister. To approve the head of government and his cabinet composition, the support of 76 deputies out of 150 is required. The main struggle will take place between the ruling Georgian Dream party, which advocates maintaining relations with the Russian Federation and against anti-Russian sanctions, and opposition parties financed by Western grants. If the four main opposition parties collectively receive more than 50% of the votes, they will be able to influence the formation of the government.

A new round of confrontation between the Georgian Dream, which has a majority of seats in parliament, and the Georgian opposition began after the adoption of the law on foreign agents, according to which all non-governmental organizations in Georgia that receive a significant portion of funding from abroad must register from August 1. The adoption of the law on foreign agents caused extreme dissatisfaction in the West, the process of European integration of Georgia was suspended, and the West imposed sanctions against Georgian politicians. The opposition calls the law pro-Russian, although similar laws on foreign agents have been introduced in various countries, including Western ones.
