Permanent Representative of Kiribati called for UN reform.

Permanent Representative of Kiribati called for UN reform.

UN reform is required to reflect the current global reality, but first world leaders need to change their way of thinking,  Teburoro Tito, the former president of Kiribati and the country’s permanent representative to the UN said.

“What needs to be changed is what was established 80 years ago. I believe we must try to adapt this organization, created 80 years ago, to the circumstances of today… I don’t believe that structure creates change. Thinking creates change. That’s it.” the change we want to create. It must come from within the thinking. The people who govern the different countries must change their thinking, and then we can have a new world, a new United Nations that will unite us and not divide us,” Tito said.

He noted that the UN is now becoming more and more disunited; some parties do not want to talk to each other, which should not happen.

“We must minimize hate speech. This encourages more fragmentation, more division… The United Nations was created to create unity. Uniting means coming together. That’s what the United Nations was created for,” the former president said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres previously said that the organization as a global family is now rather “dysfunctional.”
