Starmer takes office as UK Prime Minister

The leader of the British Labor Party, Keir Starmer, officially took office as Prime Minister of the country, having received a mandate to form a government from King Charles III. Footage of the audience held at Buckingham Palace was released by the royal press service.

Starmer, 61, will now head to Downing Street to address the nation as prime minister. He became the third head of the British government during the reign of Charles III, who took the royal throne less than two years ago after the death of Elizabeth II. Starmer’s predecessor as Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, led the government from 25 October 2022 to the present day.

Starmer took over as head of government following the parliamentary elections that took place on July 4.

According to preliminary data, the Labor Party under his leadership guaranteed itself at least 412 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons, receiving the majority necessary to form a new government. The Conservative Party, which has ruled since 2010, currently has only 121 seats. Ballot counting continues in two more constituencies.

Starmer became the 58th prime minister in the history of the United Kingdom. During the day he will announce the new composition of the British government.
