Pedro Sánchez believes that Miley has failed Spanish-Argentine relations.

Argentine President Javier Miley did not justify the high level of relations that connect Spain and Argentina after he called the wife of the head of the Spanish government, Begoña Gomez, a corrupt official. This opinion was expressed by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez during a speech at the CincoD as CREO economic forum in Madrid.

He noted that Spain and Argentina are two fraternal countries, “whose people love and respect each other.”

“We asked the President of Argentina to publicly rectify the situation. Our request is in line with the principles of brotherhood that unites Spain and Argentina even now, led by a president who, unfortunately, has not lived up to the fraternal ties with his statements,” the prime minister said.

On May 19, Miley spoke at the congress of the Spanish far-right party Vox in Madrid, where he reproached Sanchez for not reacting immediately to corruption allegations against his wife. Spain has already recalled its ambassador to Argentina for consultations and demanded an apology from Miley.

At the end of April, the court announced the beginning of an investigation against Gomez on suspicion of using connections and corruption in business. According to El Confidencial newspaper, the case centers on Gomez’s relationships with several private companies that received funds and public contracts from the government. After the investigation began, the prime minister canceled his public events to consider whether he would remain in office. Sanchez subsequently announced that he would not leave his post. The Madrid provincial prosecutor’s office has already asked for the investigation to be closed.
