In Ireland, a referendum on the concept of family and the role of women in it failed.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar admitted that the national referendum held on March 8 on expanding the concepts of family and the role of women in it in the country’s constitution failed, since it was already clear that citizens opposed.

As part of the referendums, the Irish were asked to redefine family to include strong and lasting relationships outside of marriage. In turn, the “care” amendment proposed removing references to the central role of a woman’s “life in the home” and the mother’s domestic responsibilities in caring for the rest of the family, replacing them with an article recognizing the importance of family members as a whole, without mentioning their gender.

“Leo Varadkar said that “at this stage it is clear” that both referendums were “completely failed,” local media wrote following Varadkar’s press conference.

According to him, the government accepted this result and took responsibility for it. He also admitted that the government had “failed to convince the public of the urgency of these referendums” and that this was “something that will have to be thought about“.
