A state of emergency has been declared in the Northern Mariana Islands due to Storm Bolaven.

US President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency in the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean due to the approaching tropical storm Bolaven, the White House said in a statement.

The statement follows the declaration of a state of emergency on the Pacific island of Guam.

“President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. today declared that the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is under a state of emergency and directed federal assistance to complement commonwealth and local efforts to respond to the emergency conditions resulting from Tropical Storm Bolaven,” the  statement published on the White House website reported

Earlier, the government of Guam issued a warning that the island was entering a state of readiness ahead of the approaching storm. Emergency shelters will be prepared for local residents.

The territory of Guam is an island in the Mariana Islands archipelago in the western Pacific Ocean, which has the status of an unincorporated organized territory of the United States (that is, not part of the United States, but a possession of it).
