Enlargement of the EU from 27 to 35 member states will entail many internal challenges for the union, Spain’s acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said at a press conference ahead of the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Granada.

“We are going to start this big discussion that should lead us to a deep reform of the European Union so that in the coming years we can expand it from 27 to 35 countries, and this will require many challenges from an internal point of view to continue to be effective and also logically “to be able to accept those countries that have been knocking on the door of the European Union for a long time,” he said.

Sanchez noted that Spain, which itself was admitted to the community in the 1980s, has always advocated expanding the union. In addition, the prime minister said that within the framework of the summit he would hold a bilateral meeting with Vladimir Zelensky.

The third summit of the European Political Community and the informal meeting of the European Council began in the Spanish city of Granada, located in the autonomous community of Andalusia in the south of the country. It is expected that from October 5 to 6, the heads of state and government of the European Union will begin discussing the EU development strategy for the period from 2024 to 2029. A separate issue will be the future expansion of the European Union and its consequences.
