Ecuador declares a state of emergency over the assassination of a presidential candidate.

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso has declared a state of emergency throughout the country for a period of 60 days in connection with the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.

“I am declaring a state of emergency for 60 days … From now on, the armed forces are mobilized throughout the country to guarantee the security of citizens, the tranquility of the country and free and democratic elections,” Lasso said in an address to the nation, which was broadcast on the channel of the presidential administration on YouTube.


It was previously reported that Fernando Villavicencio, the candidate of the Construye movement, received threats and was killed during a rally in Quito on Wednesday, injuring nine people in the attack. Ecuador’s Attorney General’s Office said Villavicencio, a suspect in the murder, died from gunshot wounds. It was also reported about the arrest of six people.
