Brazil opposed the supply of weapons to Ukraine.

Brazil opposed the supply of weapons to Ukraine.

The Brazilian authorities traditionally oppose unilateral sanctions imposed without the approval of the UN Security Council, and maintain their position not to send weapons to the parties to the Ukrainian conflict, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said.

NATO members at the Vilnius summit last week promised more heavy weapons supplies to Ukraine, which the Russian side says are prolonging the conflict and increasing the suffering of the civilian population.

“Brazil stands by its position not to send weapons to the parties to the conflict,” Vieira said.

According to him, this position remains unchanged, and Brazil also opposes unilateral sanctions that are not approved by the UN Security Council.

“We traditionally oppose unilateral sanctions – we recognize only those approved by the UN Security Council. This is the historical position of Brazilian foreign policy, and we adhere to it in this case as well,” the minister said, commenting on Western sanctions against Russia.
