A delegation of U.S. congressmen from the Republican Party arrived in Taiwan on Monday for a five-day visit, the island’s foreign ministry said.

The visit of a delegation of members of the Republican Research Committee of the US House of Representatives, headed by Congressman Kevin Hern, will last from July 3 to 7. According to the program of the visit, the congressmen are scheduled to meet with Taiwan’s Chief of Staff Tsai Ing-wen, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (Wu Zhaose) and other senior Taiwanese officials, they will also visit a number of think tanks to discuss issues related to Taipei-Washington relations.

The situation around Taiwan escalated significantly after a visit to the island in early August last year by then-Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. China, which considers the island one of its provinces, condemned Pelosi’s visit, seeing in this move US support for Taiwanese separatism, and held large-scale military exercises.
