Dozens of buildings, including schools, hospitals and churches, were hit by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake in the Romanian county of Arad.

“An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 recorded in Arad on Tuesday caused damage to dozens of public institutions and hundreds of homes. According to the local prefecture, dozens of public buildings in Arad County, including 18 schools, were damaged by the earthquake,” media reported.

The damage was caused to the historical building of the county council, the Cultural Center of the Pankota City Hall, the Orthodox churches in Giorok and Minish, the Orthodox Church and the Youth Center in Covasant, as well as other public buildings in Frumuseni, Alunis or Dorobanti and other settlements in the county. Dozens of private houses were also damaged.

The Arad County Emergency Committee has decided to deploy a technical support team to manage earthquake-related emergencies. The team will assess the security of the affected public buildings. After that, a decision will be made on compensation for damage to citizens.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 struck western Romania with its epicenter in Arad County on June 6.

According to the Romanian National Institute for Research on the Development of Physics of the Earth, the tremors could also be felt in Hungary, since only 68 kilometers from the epicenter to the Hungarian city of Bekescsaba.
