Republican presidential Aspirant Donald Trump is at it again, he has vow not to make life easy for any of his opponent especially Cruz. On Thursday Trump threatened to bring a lawsuit challenging rival Ted Cruz’s eligibility to serve as president, unless the Texas senator “clean[s] up his act.”
“If [Ted Cruz] doesn’t clean up his act, stop cheating, & doing negative ads, I have standing to sue him for not being a natural born citizen,” Trump said in a Tweet
Trump had earlier promised at a January GOP presidential debate not to sue Cruz over the issue.
“I’m not bringing a lawsuit,” he said. “I promise. But the Democrats are going to bring a lawsuit.”
The billionaire businessman’s statement came after many of his supporters filed a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Cruz’s presidential run.
Cruz, who is a constitutional lawyer and former Texas solicitor general, has argued and maintained that he is eligible to be president, clarifying the distinction between naturalized and natural-born citizen.
Cruz was born in Canada to an American mother and Cuban father.
In article II, Section 1 of the Constitution states “no person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of president.”
Trump has attacked Cruz’s eligibility repeatedly, and he resounded it that Democrats will file lawsuits challenging his ability to serve as president in a general election.
History has it that many candidates born outside of the U.S. have previously run for president.
The 1964 Republican nominee for president, Barry Goldwater, was born in the Arizona Territory before it became a state.
Former Michigan Gov. George Romney, father of 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who was born in Mexico to American parents. Unsuccessfully sought the GOP nomination in 1968.
And not forgetting 2008 Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) was born on a military base in Panama to American parents.
