The ongoing petition demanding President Joe Biden to lift US sanctions imposed on Iran, is getting more signatures. Over 4,000 people have so far signed the online document that the US actions only worsen the COVID-19 pandemic, IRNA reports.
The petition welcomes the review of the impacts of financial and economic sanctions on the global response to the health crisis has been launched by Codepink peace group.
So far, a petition, which was addressed to President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Tony Blinken, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, and Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen, has gained about 4,100 supports.
The document says that the former owner of the Oval Office decided to double down on the imposition of sanctions, throughout the COVID-19 crisis. The petitioners strongly believe that it was cruel and was met with global widespread condemnation.
“Over the past year, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet and Pope Francis, along with countless parliamentarians, economists and experts have called for the easing of sanctions,” the document reads.
In Iran, the sanctions have directly impeded the acquisition of medicine and medical supplies. After a year of the pandemic, it is already evident that sanctions are ‘unduly hindering’ the response to the epidemic.
The petitioners are strongly urging Joe Biden’s team to immediately implement broad sanctions relief. Sanctions kill Iran and they kill indiscriminately.
