Cuba declares pandemic ‘under control’

The total number of COVID-19 cases around the globe passed the 7 million mark, however, Cuba has declared the outbreak “under control” after the island nation registered an eighth straight day without a death from the novel virus.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said that his country of 11.2 million has recorded just under 2,200 cases and 83 deaths from the COVID-19, TRTWorld reported. Such a good epidemiological situation paves the way for an announcement next week on Cuba’s strategy to gradually lift its lockdown.

The Cuban medical brigade is going to return on Monday from Lombardy where they successfully finished their mission. Such a ‘doctors diplomacy’ is the best example of late Fidel Castro’s strategic vision, the experts say.

“Fidel was very strategic. He saw they had a surplus of doctors and he saw it as a way of garnering diplomatic support initially. Cuba has not been like North Korea – they have always wanted international support,” Paul Hare, a former British ambassador to Havana, said.

With 1,862 people having recovered, Cuba has only 244 active cases.

Meantime, the countries of Latin America suffers a lot from the novel pathogen. The infection spreads fast in Brazil, Mexico, Panama, according to the World Health Organization.

As of Monday, Brazil registered 37,312 total deaths while overall cases in the country reached 685,427. President Jair Bolsonaro was harshly criticized for his handling of the pandemic in the country. Now, the government changed its format for reporting virus statistics for the second straight day.

Another country with the deterioration COVID-19 situation is Mexico, whose health ministry reports 3,484 new cases and 188 additional fatalities, bringing the total in the country to 117,103 cases and 13,699 deaths.

Moreover, the head of Mexico’s Social Security Institute, Zoe Robledo, a close aide to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said on Sunday he had tested positive for the coronavirus and would continue to work remotely.

“I want to announce that today I tested positive for Covid-19,” Mr Robledo said on Twitter.

Panama reports 421 new cases, while confirmed cases of virus infection reached 16,425, up 421 from the previous day, and deaths climbed by seven to 393, director of Epidemiology Lourdes Moreno gave the Panama latest data at a news conference.
