War supporters in Brussels are attacking Orban, Hungary said.

The Hungarian government, in response to the decision of the European Parliament not to invite Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to the traditional meeting with the EU Council Presidency because of his foreign policy activities, said that supporters of the war in Brussels are attacking the peace mission of Hungary and its prime minister, but peace is necessary.

Orbán was not invited to the first plenary session of the new European Parliament, despite the fact that Hungary currently holds the presidency of the EU Council. Typically, the leader of a country beginning a six-month presidency of the council speaks before parliament. MEP Clara de Melo said Orban was not invited because “he does not respect the role and rules of how the European Union works.”

“Supporters of the war in Brussels oppose the Hungarian peacekeeping mission, so they are now attacking the Hungarian presidency of the European Union and the Hungarian Prime Minister. Peace is necessary, and we must act for the sake of peace,” the government said.

Orban arrived in Moscow with a delegation on July 5 and held a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He called the visit to Moscow the next stage of the peace mission, which began with a trip to Kyiv on July 2. The Hungarian Prime Minister said that he intends to hold several similar unexpected meetings soon. On Monday he visited Beijing, where he said that Hungary is against confrontation with China and for cooperation between the EU and China. After Beijing, the Hungarian prime minister went to Washington for the NATO summit, on the sidelines of which he met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
