Tokayev proposed entrusting the construction of the nuclear power plant to an international consortium.

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev believes that if citizens approve the project in a referendum, the construction and operation of the first nuclear power plant (NPP) in the republic should be entrusted to an international consortium.

On Sunday, Kazakhstan is holding a national referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP), which is planned to be built by 2035 on the coast of Balkhash. The head of state took part in voting at polling station No. 211, located in the Presidential Center. The president also held a briefing for the media, answering the question of who will build the first nuclear power plant in the country if, following the results of the referendum, the decision receives the support of the people.

“The government should engage in analysis and conduct appropriate negotiations. My personal vision of this issue is that an international consortium should work in Kazakhstan, which will consist of global companies with the most advanced technologies. Then, as they say, life will tell,” he said.

In June 2022, the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan announced that a nuclear power plant was planned to be built on the coast of Lake Balkhash in the village of Ulken in the Almaty region, spending $11.2 billion on it.
