The plenum of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam in Hanoi elected the country’s president To Lam to the post of general secretary of the party’s Central Committee.

“On the morning of August 3, 2024, a plenum of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam of the 13th convocation was held in Hanoi. Comrade To Lam, a member of the Politburo and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, was elected General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam,” the local media said in a statement.

To Lam became the third leader of the country after the founder of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, who combines the highest party and highest government positions in Vietnam. Before him, the post of General Secretary of the Party Central Committee for some time, in 2018 – 2021, was combined with the post of President of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, who died on July 19, 2024. After the death of his predecessor, President To Lam temporarily served as head of the Vietnamese Communist Party.
