The UN Court will rule on Mexico’s lawsuit against Ecuador on May 23.

The International Court of Justice will rule on May 23 on Mexico’s request for interim measures against Ecuador over the storming of the Mexican embassy in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito, the court said in a statement.

“On Thursday, May 23, 2024, the International Court of Justice will rule on Mexico’s request for provisional measures in a case involving the Mexican Embassy in Quito (Mexico v. Ecuador),” the court said on Friday.

On April 11, Mexico appealed to the International Court of Justice with a complaint against the actions of the Ecuadorian authorities, who stormed the country’s embassy in Quito to detain its former vice-president Jorge Glas.

As reported in the court’s statement, Mexico is asking the court to order interim measures against Ecuador, including ordering the Ecuadorian authorities to take appropriate and immediate steps to ensure the full protection and security of Mexico’s diplomatic missions.

The Mexican side also asks the UN court to oblige Quito to ensure that it does not take any action that could prejudice the rights of Mexico in relation to any decision that the court may make on the merits, and also to refrain from any action that could aggravate or expand this legal dispute.

On the night of April 6, Ecuadorian police forcibly entered the Mexican Embassy in Quito and took away former Vice President Jorge Glas, convicted of corruption. He had been hiding at the diplomatic mission since December last year. Mexico granted him political asylum on April 5. Ecuador called this decision illegal and demanded the extradition of the politician. The Ecuadorian police, as reported by the Mexican Foreign Ministry, entered the territory of the diplomatic mission in two armored vehicles, and some law enforcement officers climbed over the walls.

Diplomats were injured during the storming of the embassy building. Mexico severed diplomatic relations with Ecuador that same night.
