The Syrian political opposition reaffirms its commitment to a political solution to the crisis in the country and UN Security Council resolution 2254, Badr Jamus, head of the negotiating commission of the Syrian opposition, said.
⠀
The negotiating commission of the Syrian opposition held its first meeting since 2019 in Geneva on June 3-4, in the presence of all its participants. It is noteworthy that until recently the commission was in a state of crisis due to the boycott of its activities by a number of opposition platforms.
⠀
“We are ready, united and agree that a political solution is the basis, and resolution 2254 is our compass. In the final statement, it was clear that we will follow any existing path that will lead us to a political settlement and resolution 2254,” Jamus said.
⠀
Jamus added that the Syrian political opposition still sees Geneva as the only suitable place for negotiations with official Damascus, basing its position on the neutrality of the Swiss city.
⠀
“We still insist that the best place is Geneva: It is a neutral place and we do not want to enter into conflicts between states and ways … This is a neutral place of the United Nations. We were not offered alternatives for discussion, and our position on the issue Geneva is clear,” Jamus said.
