Romanian Senator Diana Soshoaca, speaking at a parliamentary meeting, demanded a review of the country’s participation in NATO and a national referendum on this issue, the parliamentarian’s press service told on Thursday.
⠀
Romania has been a NATO member since 1999. One of the leaders of the Social Democratic Party of Romania, Mircea Geoana, has held the position of deputy secretary general of the alliance since October 2019.
⠀
“The senator made an official statement in parliament on this issue. In her address to the leadership of parliament, the government, Shoshoake called for the convening of defense commissions of both houses of parliament and the Supreme Council of National Defense for an urgent review of the provisions of the North Atlantic Treaty and the preparation of amendments to ensure the protection of the national sovereignty of Romania , and she also insisted on the need to prepare and hold a national referendum on Romania’s membership in NATO, which should have been held upon joining the alliance,” the parliamentarian’s press service noted.
⠀
Shoshoake also emphasized in her report that the North Atlantic Treaty, since its creation, has become an instrument of oppression of peoples, used by the United States to advance its economic interests, and not “to protect peace and democracy, as stated.”
