“Today is a day of glory because the people of Mexico have freely and democratically decided that Claudia Sheinbaum will become the first female President in the 200 years of independent life of our Republic,” the Mexican president wrote.

After processing 25% of the ballots, the National Electoral Institute INE reported that Sheinbaum confidently won the presidential election. On Sunday, nearly 100 million Mexicans could vote in a general election that will determine the future president, Congress, state governors and local authorities – more than 20,000 government positions in total. Official results of the elections in Mexico will be announced after the counting of votes, which will last June 5-8.

The winner of the vote is determined in one round according to the relative majority system – the candidate who scores more than the rest will become president. The President-elect will be inaugurated for a six-year term four months after Election Day, October 1, 2024, the day the federal executive powers are transferred.
