The Netherlands’ spending on refugees has increased by more than €1 billion.

The Dutch authorities’ spending on accepting refugees in 2023 amounted to €2.7 billion, which is more than €1 billion more than a year earlier. This was reported by the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers.

According to it, a total of €1.6 billion was spent on accepting refugees in 2022. The increase is mainly due to the high cost of organizing temporary accommodation in crisis situations. Last year the need for this increased by almost a third.

According to the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers, temporary crisis accommodation cost €69,400 per person per year in 2023, more than double the cost of regular accommodation.

A total of 56 thousand refugees arrived in the country, which is 1 thousand more than in 2022. Slightly less than half of them came from Syria – more than 26 thousand people. In second and third places are Turkey (4.5 thousand people) and Yemen (3.7 thousand people).

The placement of Ukrainian refugees is not taken into account in these statistics, as they fall into a separate category
