The most powerful earthquake in recorded history occurred in Helsinki.

The strongest earthquake in the history of measurements occurred in Helsinki on Christmas Day, broadcaster Yle reports.

“According to Toni Veikkolainen, a seismologist at the University of Helsinki, the Christmas Day earthquake had a magnitude of 1.1… It was the strongest earthquake ever measured in Helsinki,” the material says.

The earthquake lasted less than a minute. The exact cause is not yet clear, but it did not appear to be a “human-caused” earthquake.

Residents of several areas located near the epicenter of the earthquake heard a strong bang, and the police received reports of an explosion, the broadcaster said.

According to Veikkolainen, cited by Yle, about two hundred earthquakes are recorded annually in Finland. For example, in September there were two earthquakes of magnitude less than 1 in Helsinki.

Earthquakes of magnitude 1.7 and 2.6 have already occurred in the capital region in 2013 and 2011. Then tremors were felt in the cities of Espoo and Mäntsälä.
