Israeli fighter jets carried out a series of airstrikes in Yemen, primarily on its capital Sanaa, which is controlled by the Shiite Ansar Allah (Houthi) movement, a local government source said.
⠀
“Israeli fighter jets carried out six raids on Sanaa International Airport and the adjacent Ed-Daylami airbase in northern Sanaa. As a result of the aerial bombardment, the civilian airport, including the runway and departure hall, suffered significant damage,” the source said.
⠀
Two more strikes each hit a power plant in the Haziz area in southern Sanaa, as well as the port of Hodeidah on the Red Sea.
⠀
The bombing took place during a weekly speech by Houthi leader Abdel Malik al-Houthi, the source added.
⠀
As the Middle East conflict escalated, the Ansar Allah movement began attacking Israeli-linked ships, causing shipping traffic through the Suez Canal to plummet.
⠀
The Houthis explain their actions as helping the Palestinians and say they are not interfering with freedom of navigation in the region. Arab and Muslim countries have repeatedly warned the United States that unconditional support for Israel’s actions in Gaza will lead to the spread of the conflict throughout the region.
⠀
Tensions between the Houthis and Israel have risen sharply in recent weeks. The Houthis began attacking the territory of the Jewish state almost daily with missiles and drones, threatening a proportionate response to any bombing. Israel, for its part, is attacking targets in Yemen.
