The former speaker of the Iranian parliament has registered to participate in the presidential elections.

The second day of registration of candidates to participate in the presidential elections in Iran began with the registration of the former head of the Majlis (parliament) and member of the Council of Expediency (the highest advisory body under Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei) Ali Larijani. The SNN TV channel is broadcasting live from the election headquarters in Tehran.

Larijani appeared at the election headquarters, which performs the functions of registering candidates for the presidency, virtually immediately after the start of its work on the second day. The former head of parliament spoke with journalists. Larijani made a speech and announced that the main priority of his “diplomacy will be resolving the issue of lifting sanctions.”

Larijani, 66, headed Iran’s parliament from 2008-2020. In 2005, he already attempted to run for the presidency of the country, but lost, finishing sixth among seven candidates. The victory in those elections was won by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was at the head of the executive branch of the Islamic republic from 2005 to 2013.

According to Turkish media, the main struggle for the post of President of Iran after the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a plane crash may unfold between the former and current speakers of the parliament of the Islamic Republic, Ali Larijani and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
