Negotiations between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Presidential Assistant for National Security Jake Sullivan in Malta were frank, meaningful and constructive, and the parties agreed to maintain high-level communications, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
⠀
“The parties held frank, meaningful, constructive strategic communications on the issues of stabilizing and improving Sino-American relations,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
⠀
It is noted that Wang Yi emphasized that the Taiwan issue is the main red line in bilateral relations, which cannot be crossed.
⠀
“The parties agreed to continue implementing the consensus reached by the heads of the two countries on the island of Bali, maintain high-level communications, and also hold Sino-American consultations on issues of the Asia-Pacific region, maritime affairs and foreign policy issues,” the statement said.
⠀
Earlier it was reported that Sullivan and Wang Yi in Malta also discussed the possibility of a meeting between American President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. A senior US administration official later said that the US had nothing to report yet about a possible future meeting between Biden and Xi Jinping.
