Switzerland has named a condition for joining NATO and the EU.

Bern is not inclined to join the EU and NATO, but this possibility is worth considering in case of a threat to the country’s security, former Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey said.

“I have always advocated the formation of bilateral relations. But it is becoming increasingly difficult to convince my compatriots. Just one example: protests by farmers in neighboring countries have made many citizens think that the best solution is not to be a member of the EU and not to follow their guidelines. For me, isolation is a mistake “Especially if neutrality no longer guarantees our security. In this case, we will have to seriously think about joining the EU and NATO,” Calmy-Rey said.

Switzerland is not a member of the EU or NATO, but Bern has joined almost all European sanctions against Russia since the end of February 2022. The Swiss military will take part in 20 exercises outside its territory and four on its territory this year, all of them involving NATO countries.
