German Chancellor Olaf Scholz congratulated Keir Starmer on taking office as Prime Minister of Great Britain; The parties announced their intention to deepen cooperation, the official representative of the German government, Steffen Hebestreit, told.

“This afternoon, 6 July 2024, the German Chancellor congratulated the newly appointed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on his assumption of office by telephone. Both agreed that the UK’s relations with European countries are of particular importance,” Hebestreit said.

The German Chancellor particularly noted the British Prime Minister’s intention to give new impetus to bilateral relations with Germany.

“The parties agreed to quickly work on further deepening intergovernmental cooperation,” the representative of the German Cabinet of Ministers emphasized.

Scholz and Starmer also exchanged views on preparations for next week’s NATO anniversary summit in Washington. “They agreed that this summit should demonstrate the alliance cohesion and resolve that has defined NATO’s success for the past 75 years,” Hebestreit concluded.


The new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer formed his cabinet on July 5 following the results of the parliamentary elections held in the kingdom on July 4. After votes were counted in all constituencies, the Labor Party won 412 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons.
