Former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has been detained by Scottish police over an investigation into funding the Scottish National Party (SNP), Sky News reported.

“Today, Sunday, June 11, 2023, a 52-year-old woman was detained as a suspect in connection with an ongoing investigation into the funding <…> of the Scottish National Party,” the police said on the official website.

The department noted that the suspect is in custody, detectives are interrogating her.

According to the channel, the detainee is Nicola Sturgeon.

In April, it was reported that some members of the Scottish National Party considered it “inevitable” that the former First Minister should be detained in the party’s funding investigation.

Previously, the police in the same case detained Peter Murrell, Sturgeon’s husband, he served as the executive director of the SNP. Murrell is also accused of failing to declare an interest-free loan of more than £100,000 to the party to help with “cash flow”. The police later released him.

The Telegraph newspaper previously reported that Scottish police confiscated a motorhome worth about £110,000 from the mother-in-law of the former First Minister of Scotland.

Nicola Sturgeon announced her resignation on February 15 after eight years as First Minister of Scotland. Health Minister Hamza Yusuf became the new leader of the Scottish National Party.
