Donald Trump, despite his previous clash with Pope Francis, arrived Vatican with an official visit. The contrasting styles and differing worldviews of two leaders weren’t the obstacles for the 30-minute private friendly conversation between Trump and pontiff at the Vatican City on Wednesday.
Both sides left behind their previous clashes to broadcast a tone of peace for an audience around the globe.
Donald Trump, accompanied by his wife Melania and two assistants, arrived at the Vatican just after 8 AM local time on Wednesday. The president greeted Francis in Sala del Tronetto (the room of the little throne) on the second floor of Apostolic Palace.
Meeting between the pontiff and Donald Trump
The Pope Francis gave Donald Trump a medal featuring an olive branch, a symbol of peace, among other gifts. The only thing President could response was: “We can use peace.” It is worth to say that Francis was then introduced to members of Trump’s delegation: Melania, Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner in the first turn.
Donald trump and the pontiff started their personal meeeting from the handshake. the American President could be heard thanking the pope and saying it was “a great honor” to be there. The 30-minute meeting ended when Vatican sovereign rang the bell in his private study.
Pope and the US President have been in agreement on a need for Muslim leaders to do more against extremists in their own communities. But there are few other areas where their views align.
