India supported the expansion of BRICS.

India supports the expansion of BRICS, including Turkey’s accession to the organization. This was stated by Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during the Manama Dialogue political forum in Bahrain.

“India has supported the expansion of BRICS. Many countries from this region (Gulf) have joined BRICS,” he said.

According to Jaishankar, at the last BRICS summit, the discussion not so much about the BRICS membership category, but about the partnership category, was continued, which New Delhi also views positively.

Answering a question about how India views Turkey’s joining BRICS, the Indian minister noted that “New Delhi takes a very positive approach to Ankara’s involvement in various formats.”

The BRICS group was created in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined in 2011. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia became members of the group. On October 22-24 this year, the 16th BRICS summit was held in Kazan, which became a key event of the Russian Federation’s chairmanship in the association.

In addition to the leaders of the member countries of the association, it was also attended by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the heads of a number of states that are not members of the BRICS, such as Turkey and Palestine.
