Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, amid Israeli attacks in the region, has called for the UN General Assembly’s authority to use armed force to be strengthened, as reflected in the Uniting for Peace resolution adopted in 1950.

According to the Uniting for Peace resolution adopted in 1950, in any cases where the UN Security Council, due to lack of unanimity among its five permanent members, is unable to act as required to maintain international peace and security, the General Assembly will immediately consider this issue and can make appropriate recommendations to UN members regarding collective measures, including the use of armed force when necessary, to maintain or restore international peace and security.

“If the (UN) Security Council does not show the necessary will, it is necessary to quickly activate the power of the UN General Assembly to recommend the use of force, as in the Uniting for Peace resolution of 1950,” the Turkish leader said in his address to the nation after a cabinet meeting in Monday, which lasted about four hours.

On September 23, the Israeli Army General Staff assigned the name “Arrows of the North” to the offensive operation that began in Lebanon. The Israeli Air Force is carrying out massive strikes against targets of the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah in different areas of Lebanon. Several targeted airstrikes were also recorded on Beirut, as a result of which high-ranking Hezbollah commanders were eliminated, as well as the movement’s Secretary General Hassan Nasrullah. To date, the Israeli army has reported strikes on several thousand Hezbollah targets. Observers note that Israel has not attacked Hezbollah with such intensity since the Second Lebanon War in 2006.
