Economist Kondratiev explained Finland’s refusal of the project with Rosatom with its plans for NATO
Finland’s refusal to build a nuclear power plant together with Rosatom is explained by the country’s preparations for joining NATO. This was stated by Deputy Head of the Economic Department of the Institute for Energy and Finance, Sergei Kondratiev.
“The country’s government is preparing for an early entry into NATO, freezing economic cooperation with Russia, imposing sanctions against Russian companies and citizens. Under these conditions, it would be extremely difficult to save the project, and the Finnish authorities probably did not consider such an opportunity, ”said Kondratiev.
He also added that Fennovoima has recently faced strong opposition to the project at the national and pan-European level.

“I think that the construction of Hanhikivi will definitely be frozen for several years – the consortium will need to look for new investors and contractors, negotiate with Rosatom on compensation for the expenses already incurred by the Russian company, and so on,” Kondratyev sees the development of the situation. In his opinion, the nuclear power plant is unlikely to be put into operation before 2033-2035.
