Former police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted of killing black George Floyd, was attacked in an American prison, the Associated Press reports.

“Derek Chauvin was stabbed by another inmate in an Arizona prison,” the report said.

According to agency sources, Chauvin was seriously injured, prison staff provided him with first aid and sent him to the hospital. Other details of what happened were not provided in the message.

Chauvin is being held in a general security prison along with about 400 other prisoners, the agency reports.

The killing of African-American Floyd by white police officer Chauvin on May 25, 2020 sparked mass protests and riots throughout the United States. Footage appeared on the Internet showing that the police handcuffed Floyd, knocked him down and three of them pinned him to the ground, with one of them kneeling on his neck. Floyd in the video says several times that he can’t breathe, then goes quiet. He died in intensive care. After the riots began, four police officers were fired, and one of them, Derek Chauvin, was charged with negligent homicide. For this article, Chauvin was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison.
