Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Sun Weidong and Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink had a constructive exchange of views on China-US relations and the situation in the Asia-Pacific region, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

On September 27, Sun Weidong and Krietenbrink held China-US consultations on Asia-Pacific issues in Washington.

“The parties had a frank, in-depth and constructive exchange of views on Chinese-American relations, the situation in the Asia-Pacific region, the regional policies of each country, as well as on international and regional issues of common interest,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement following the results of the meetings.

At the same time, it is noted that Sun Weidong outlined Beijing’s position on the Taiwan issue and emphasized that the “one China” principle is the basis for maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait region.

The Chinese side also emphasized that “positive interaction between China and the United States in the Asia-Pacific region corresponds to the common interests of both sides and is the common desire of the countries in the region.”

“The parties agreed to continue to maintain cooperation on affairs of the Asia-Pacific region,” the department said in a statement.

On the same day, Sun Weidong held a meeting with US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland; details of this meeting are not given.
