The Romanian Prosecutor General’s Office opened a criminal investigation into the explosions at a gas station in Crevedia, where one person died and dozens were injured.

Four explosions occurred at a gas station on Saturday in the city of Crevedia, Dymbovitsa county, which is located 13 kilometers from the Romanian capital. According to the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, one person died and 57 were injured.

“The Department of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Medical Examination of the General Prosecutor’s Office accepted for consideration the case of an explosion that occurred in the village of Krevedia, Dymbovitsa county, on the afternoon of August 26, 2023. An investigation is underway on the grounds of committing a crime of intentional destruction of property that caused a catastrophe (Part 1 and 2 article 255 of the Criminal Code). An investigation has been launched on the spot, it is coordinated by the prosecutor,” the website of the prosecutor’s office says.

The Prosecutor’s Office cooperates with members of the Judicial Police, specialists from the National Institute of Criminalistics, members of the National Institute of Forensic Medical Examination of the Ministry of Justice and other experts.

The first explosion occurred at a gas station in the city of Crevedia around 19.30. Traffic has been suspended. Despite the efforts of firefighters, the fire spread to other gas tanks, so several more explosions followed.

Rescuers evacuated more than three thousand people from the danger zone with a radius of 700 meters. An anti-crisis cell has been created, experts from the Ministry of the Environment have been involved, who are instructed to monitor air quality.
