A referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant will be held in Kazakhstan.

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that a referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant in the republic will take place on October 6.

“A nationwide referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant will take place on October 6 of this year. Today I will sign the corresponding decree,” Tokayev said, addressing the people with a message.

The head of state added that he spoke about holding a national vote on this topic last year; this topic “has been on the public agenda for a year now.”

“I believe that this is a sufficient period for citizens to make an informed decision,” Tokayev noted.

He also said that the upcoming referendum would be another manifestation of a broad national dialogue and a shining example of the implementation of the concept of a “listening state.”

“Given the growing global energy shortage, we are in dire need of reliable and environmentally friendly sources of energy,” the President of Kazakhstan said.
