A hurricane hits the Mexican state of Guerrero.

Hurricane Otis, a maximum category five hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, hit the coast of the Mexican state of Guerrero on Wednesday night, there were no reports of casualties, but communications with the region were disrupted, the country’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said.

“At the moment there is no information about human casualties, but there is no connection and we don’t know. There is material damage, destroyed roads, landslides on the highway in Acapulco,” the politician said during a press conference broadcast on social networks by his administration.

According to the Mexican leader, the hurricane hit many coastal municipalities “very hard” and continues to move through Guerrero.

Otis, which reached its maximum Saffir-Simpson power category with sustained winds exceeding 70 meters per second before landfall, has now weakened to a category two (43-49 m/s), the National Weather Service said.
