About 42 thousand liters of petroleum products were spilled near the port of Hamburg

At least 42,000 liters of petroleum products were spilled in the Katvückhafen canal, near the Hamburg container port,  firefighters reported.

To prevent an environmental disaster on the Elbe, firefighters, river police and representatives of local environmental authorities have been working at the site since late Sunday evening.

The spill occurred from a tank that stood on the territory of a company specializing in the collection, transportation and storage of liquid oil distillation residues. The reasons for the oil products entering the river are still unknown.

More than 90,000 cubic meters of water have been polluted. Emergency services are trying to prevent polluted water from entering the main stream of the Elbe River with the help of floating oil barriers. A police helicopter is also involved in the operation to monitor the situation.
