More than 50 people have died from an unknown disease in DR Congo

More than 50 people have died from an unknown disease in the north-west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Actualité newspaper reported, citing authorities.

“A fever of unknown origin is spreading in the area of the city of Basankusu in the Equatorial Province. <…> More than 943 cases have been identified since the beginning of February, while 52 people have died,” the article says.

The first cases of an unknown disease were recorded on February 9.

The mortality rate of the disease, taking into account the number of detected cases and deaths, is 5.5%.


Patients have fever, chills, headache, joint pain, and other symptoms.


At the same time, the publication writes that about 55% of the rapid tests performed tested positive for malaria. The possibility of a possible Ebola outbreak has been ruled out.
