China opposes the US expansion of its nuclear arsenal under the pretext of the non-existent “Chinese nuclear threat,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said at a briefing on Thursday, commenting on the classified US nuclear strategy.

Earlier, the New York Times reported that US President Joe Biden in March approved a classified US nuclear strategy, which for the first time speaks of a plan to contain China as China’s nuclear arsenals grow, as well as preparations for coordinated challenges from Beijing, Pyongyang and Moscow.

“China strongly opposes the US expansion of its nuclear arsenal and its evasion of its own nuclear disarmament obligations under the pretext of the non-existent ‘Chinese nuclear threat,'” Wu Qian said.

He noted that China has always strictly adhered to the nuclear strategy of self-defense and maintains its nuclear capabilities at the minimum level necessary to ensure national security.
