Dodon advocated the adoption of a law on foreign agents.

Former President of Moldova, leader of the opposition Party of Socialists Igor Dodon spoke in favor of adopting a law on foreign agents, similar to the Georgian one.

In his opinion, NGOs in Moldova have excessive influence, exceeding the influence of the media and politicians.

“We need tools to check what non-governmental organizations are doing, which are becoming a separate branch of government in our country and have even greater power than the media and politicians. NGO budgets reach hundreds of millions,” Dodon wrote in his Telegram channel.

There are more than 12 thousand registered non-governmental organizations in Moldova.
The Georgian parliament passed the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence” in the third and final reading in May, despite street protests. Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili vetoed the law on May 18, calling the law “Russian” and “unconstitutional.”

Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili signed the law on June 3 after the president refused to do so. Papuashvili then explained that after signing the law, within 60 days, the Ministry of Justice of Georgia will develop all the necessary regulations and create an electronic portal for organizations. After this, those organizations that have more than 20% foreign funding will be required to register on the portal and declare their 2023 finances.

The adoption of the law on foreign agents in Georgia caused discontent in the West. The US and the EU announce a review of relations with Georgia. The American side has already canceled the planned military exercises, and the European Union has frozen funding for the Georgian Ministry of Defense.
