Experts in Iran have put into operation the Rasht-Caspian railway line in Gilan province on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, the said section is part of the international North-South transport corridor, the Iranian government reports.

The section from the city of Rasht to the port of Caspian in northern Iran is the initial stage of construction of the Rasht-Astara railway. In the future, it is planned to build the next section of tracks from the port of Caspian to the city of Astara in northwestern Iran.

“On the last day of the spring of 1403 (the Iranian calendar year began in March 2024), with the participation of the acting president (Mohammad Mokhber), a section of the Rasht-Caspian railway was put into operation,” a message posted on the Iranian government’s Telegram channel says.

According to the Iranian news agency ISNA, the Rasht-Caspian railway is one of the most important and highest priority railway projects in Iran to complete the international North-South transport corridor. This project is of great importance for Iran’s trade with countries in the Middle East region and Europe.

The Rasht-Caspian railway, 37 kilometers long, allows connecting the southern and northern ports of Iran, representing a link between the Caspian Sea and the Persian and Oman Gulfs. According to the deputy governor of Gilan province for construction approvals, Musa Fakur, work on this railway project began five years ago. A small part of the route, he clarified, is located inside the territory of the Anzeli commercial and industrial zone.
